Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen qualified P2 while teammate Yuki Tsunoda suffered a huge crash in Q1 ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.

Verstappen's first push lap in Q1 was the only lap he needed, as it saw him top the times with a 1:15.175, comfortably sending him through to Q2.

After a lengthy delay, Q2 got underway with Verstappen's first run seeing him sit P3 behind the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, with the gap 0.159 seconds from Piastri's initial time of 1:15.241.

The four-time World Champion did not improve his time, but it was enough to go through to Q3 in P5, with eyes firmly on his starting position.

Verstappen's first push lap saw him post a 1:14.772, topping the time charts early in the final phase of qualifying.

His first time was pipped by Piastri on his final run, with the Dutchman's final run falling 0.034 seconds short of claiming pole.

The time was good enough for Verstappen to start on the front row, however, and he will line up P2.

Tsunoda's qualifying, meanwhile, was over before it began after a big crash early on his first push lap in Q1 ended his day prematurely.

The 25-year-old hit the curb in Turn 5, also known as the Villeneuve Chicane, and his car bottomed out, spinning him around and into the barriers, which flipped him up into the air.

Fortunately, he walked away from the incident and appeared okay. He will likely have to start tomorrow's Grand Prix from the pit lane, depending on the extent of damage sustained to his RB21.
