Poor weather created the perfect storm for a chaotic Miami Sprint Race, with Red Bull picking up zero points.
After some heavy rain prior to the race start, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc hitting the wall, a red flag was waved after two formation laps behind the safety car.
With track conditions having improved greatly, a standing start was conducted after a couple more laps behind the safety car, with the race officially starting on lap two.
Verstappen managed to climb a place after the first corner after pole sitter Kimi Antonelli dropped back after a poor start.
The Dutchman was noted, however, for being out of position at the race start. However, the stewards determined that no further investigation was required.
Tsunoda, who originally started in the pit lane due to suspension changes under Parc Ferme conditions, climbed two places after starting P20 on the grid.
With the track continuing to dry, Tsunoda pitted on lap 11 for slick medium tyres, hoping to drive faster than the cars ahead on intermediates.
After others pitted, Tsunoda climbed to P11.
It was a nightmare situation for Verstappen when he was called in for a pit stop, as the Red Bull engineers released him straight into the path of Antonelli, seeing the two collide.
The situation was investigated and Verstappen was handed a 10-second time penalty, effectively ending his chances of finishing in the points with the safety car called out for Fernando Alonso's crash.
The Sprint ended under the safety car, with Tsunoda finishing just outside the points in P9 after Versyappen's penalty sending him down to P17.
A race to forget for Red Bull, who will now need to focus on qualifying later today ahead of tomorrow's feature race.
