Professional football won't resume until end of April at the earliest, the FA confirms

Professional football in England won’t resume until 30 April, at the earliest, the FA have confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

MK Dons were due to play five matches in April, including three at Stadium MK against Fleetwood Town, Accrington Stanley and Blackpool.

The professional game was originally postponed until April 3rd due to the coronavirus pandemic but the decision has been made amongst the football authorities to extend that until, at least, the end of next month.

The FA have also confirmed, with regards to their rule which states “the season shall terminate not later than the 1 June”, that they will extend the limit indefinitely for the 2019/20 season.

This could allow the professional game to resume the football season and ensure all domestic league campaigns can be completed, including MK Dons’ League One season.

A statement from the FA read: “The FA, Premier League, EFL and women’s professional game, together with the PFA and LMA understand we are in unprecedented times and our thoughts are with everyone affected by COVID-19.

We are united in our commitment to finding ways of resuming the football season and ensuring all domestic and European club league and cup matches are played as soon as it is safe and possible to do so.

“We have collectively supported UEFA in postponing EURO 2020 to create space in the calendar to ensure domestic and European club league and cup matches have an increased opportunity to be played and, in doing so, maintain the integrity of each competition.

“The progress of COVID-19 remains unclear and we can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority. We will continue to follow Government advice and work collaboratively to keep the situation under review and explore all options available to find ways of resuming the season when the conditions allow.”

MK Dons were due to play five matches in April, including three at Stadium MK against Fleetwood Town, Accrington Stanley and Blackpool – all of which will now be postponed and rescheduled for a later date.

They had already seen their fixture with Gillingham postponed, along with their away fixtures at Oxford United and Tranmere Rovers.

As things stand, the next MK Dons fixture set to take place as originally scheduled is their trip to Ipswich Town on Sunday 3 May.
