Petition launched for 20mph speed limit to be introduced on Milton Keynes estate

A petition has been created in a bid to lower the soeed limit on Fonda Meadows, Oxley Park.

The petition also suggests that additional pavement pedestrian safety measures should be implemented.

Shazna Muzammil explains: "Oxley Park is a residential area, with schools and parks used by residents on an everyday basis.  There are large numbers of school-going children, members of the working population and retired persons living and walking in this newly-developed area.

"The pavements are too narrow, the cars are too fast, there are no adequate crossing facilities, and there is insufficient parking space. Cars park on the pavement, putting pedestrians' lives at danger when they are forced to use the road to push prams or walk past."

She continues: "This is an accident waiting to happen, especially on bends, where visibility is reduced. I have seen this happen and cringed with worry for a new mum pushing her pram or kids playing on the pavements.

"In and around Fonda Meadows, it is imperative to introduce 20MPH to prevent cars from speeding. Vehicles travelling at high speeds and turning into and out of side roads are less able to notice pedestrians and/or parked cars, frequently causing them to manoeuvre dangerously, endangering not only their own lives but the lives of others.

"This needs to change now before any more life is put at risk."

One resident responded saying: "Cars are driven to fast on Fonda Meadows. The poor parking, especially on bends, junctions and where the road is already narrow are an additional hazard. Both the parking and speed issues need enforcement."

Shazna will be working with the local councillors to raise this petition to MK Council, but without the support of residents it will be an uphill battle.
