Over £7,000 raised for victims of devastating Milton Keynes fire in one week

Residents have been rallying together in support for the victims of a large fire that destroyed a local nursery and homes last week.

At around 12pm on Tuesday last week (19/7), emergency services were called to a devastating fire in Walnut Tree, Milton Keynes.

The fire left three homes and a nursery completely destroyed.

A total of 39 properties were evacuated and at its peak, 15 fire engines were on the scene from across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire.

Many surrounding homes were also left without power or electricity, as a result of the blaze.

Residents were quick to offer a wide range of support including clothes, food, drink and rooms to those who may be in need.

It wasn't long until a JustGiving page was launched, by the Walton Community Project, in a bid to support those affected.

A spokesperson wrote: "We the Walton Community Support Project want to help support the victims; which has affected the lives of many residents, both directly through the loss of their homes, or from the fallout through loss of power resulting in freezers and fridges being inoperational on the hottest day on UK record.

"It is not only the homes of residents that have been lost, but the loss of a valued local child care facility Kiddi Caru.

"Lots of people have asked what they can do to help and we the Walton Community Support Project believe that we are perfectly positioned to collect and distribute resources to those who need them.

"Please give generously to support people living in your community."

Within two days of the fundraiser being created, organisers had to increase the target twice.

Now, a week on, over £7,000 has been raised in support of those affected by the fires.

The charity, Walton Community Support Project thanked those who have donated saying: "WOW WOW WOW. We can't thank you all enough for your hugely generous donations to the cause.

"When we set up this Just Giving page, we had no idea quite how many people had been affected and as such the target keeps changing as we have now surpassed 2 targets that we set. You are all fabulous, caring, thoughtful and generous people and we are extremely grateful for your support."

Nursery staff and those working in the nearby veterinary clinic, pub, meeting places and shops, have also been praised for their quick-thinking and evacuations, which meant that all children and animals were taken to safety and reunited with family.

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue say the fire started on a fence before spreading to neighbouring buildings. Not long after the blaze, Bucks Fire and rescue declared a 'major incident' due to the high demand across the area.
