The Progressive Alliance say they have put aside over £18 million to help struggling residents as bills skyrocket.
The Labour/Lib Dem run Milton Keynes Council budget which was passed on Wednesday evening, includes:
- Over £15 million to help residents on low incomes pay their Council Tax bill
- Over £3 million for concessionary public transport fares
- Half a million pounds to help people struggling with the energy crisis
- £150,000 to maintain a Local Welfare Provision Scheme, which can help residents in need by providing items such as beds, cookers, and fridge freezers
The budget also tackles child poverty, funds projects such as a second Summer of Play for vulnerable children and young people, and sets out nearly £19 million for mental health support for children and adults.
Labour Councillor Rob Middleton, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “Our budget provides real help to our residents, who are facing skyrocketing energy bills, the highest inflation in 30-years, expensive food bills and a National Insurance hike.”
“The Tory government has repeatedly let the people of Milton Keynes down, but the Progressive Alliance puts residents first, and we’re doing everything we can to help the people of Milton Keynes through this cost-of-living crisis.”
Liberal Democrat Councillor Jane Carr is the Cabinet Member for Tackling Inequality and Child Poverty: “We’re already seeing reports that the National Insurance rise could mean one million families will live in destitution, with extreme poverty increasing by a third. The Tory government is refusing to take action, but we know something needs to be done.”
“That’s why our budget invests in the things that matter – an energy crisis fund, energy efficiency measures, a second Summer of Play, and tackling child poverty.”
“Sadly, the Conservative Group voted against the budget on Wednesday night, voting against help for their residents.”
