A broken down car was causing delays of around 10 minutes on the M1 in Milton Keynes earlier.
Traffic was congested southbound on the M1 between J14 at Milton Keynes and J13 at Milton Keynes South/Bedford because of the incident.
Average speeds on the section were down to around 30mph according to speed sensors with traffic beginning to back up to Newport Pagnell Services.
The incident was in the roadworks area where narrow lanes and speed restrictions of 50mph apply.
Highways officials reported that traffic had returned to normal at around 4.10pm.
