Fire officials have said it 'now seems likely' that a barbecue caused two field fires in Olney this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the two large grass fires at 4.09pm this afternoon at River Meadow off Church Street, Olney, Milton Keynes.

In a statement on social media, Bucks Fire and Rescue said: "It now seems likely that a barbecue caused today's field fires in Olney, underlining the importance of following the safety precautions we highlighted yesterday."

The fire affected ten hectares of freshly cut hay in adjacent fields.

It was extinguished using haydrags, beaters and water from the River Great Ouse - as well as a drone.

Residents from across the town reported seeing smoke from their homes as the blaze was brought under control.

Seven different fire crews attended the scene including from Newport Pagnell, Broughton, West Ashland, Aylesbury, Harrold and Banbury.
