The Olney Community Fridge has reached a new milestone, processing its largest monthly amount of food so far, with 1.3 tonnes passing through in August.
The remarkable achievement was made possible by the hard work of dedicated volunteers who collected, delivered, weighed, and sorted the food throughout the month.
Established by Olney Town Council in partnership with the local initiative "Olney is Kind," the Community Fridge was created to reduce food waste and prevent it from ending up in landfills. The fridge is open to all, providing access to surplus food and encouraging community participation in the fight against waste.
Major contributions to the fridge came from local supermarkets, including Sainsbury’s and the Co-op, as well as donations from allotment holders and residents of Olney. This collective effort ensured that a substantial amount of food was saved from going to waste.
In a post on Facebook, Olney Town Council expressed their gratitude, “The Olney Community Fridge continues to work wonders in helping to avoid unnecessary food waste, as these updated figures prove. Thanks again to anyone who has contributed, but most importantly to our small team of volunteers who have worked really hard over the summer months with such large quantities.”
The Olney Community Fridge is located at the rear entrance of The Olney Centre on West Street (postcode MK46 5HR). Those interested in donating can find more information on how to contribute and support this vital community effort here.
This success highlights the positive impact the Community Fridge is having, not only in preventing waste but in fostering a spirit of collaboration and sustainability within the town.
