New plans to tackle potholes on the road network across MK were agreed at Cabinet this week.
The Highways Asset Management Plan (HAMP) sets out how additional measures are being introduced to target more potholes and maintain the condition of the road network.
Its key pothole-beating points are:
- Changing the depth that potholes need to reach to be investigated for repair from 50mm to 40mm
- Making sure that where a pothole is being repaired, any other potholes nearby will be fixed at the same time even if they are less than 40mm deep
- Repairing potholes wider than 300mm regardless of depth
The council will also adopt the Department for Transport (DfT) Code of Practice which sets national standards of road conditions, as by maintaining MK’s road network to these high standards we’ll receive the maximum level of government funding to invest back into the highways infrastructure.
Figures released by the DfT earlier this year put the condition of MK’s highways second best of all local authorities in England.
Council Leader, Cllr Pete Marland said “We listen when you tell us that potholes and the condition of MK’s roads is important to you. We’ve already committed to fixing 20,000 potholes by April next year and we’re well on our way to that target”.
“This plan will help to further reduce the number of potholes on our roads and you’ll really notice a difference.”
Leader of the Liberal Democrats at MK Council, Cllr Douglas McCall said “I am very pleased that two changes called for in the Lib Dem manifesto are being implemented, namely that the intervention criteria be lowered and that clusters of potholes be repaired”.
The Council has already carried out over 10k pothole repairs between April and September this year.
