Charity plea for help as winter months approach.
A Milton Keynes homelessness charity is calling on supporters to continue helping its annual Winter Bed Campaign, which has already raised more than £8,000 thanks to local donors.
In response to this early support and rising demand for emergency winter services, the charity has now increased its fundraising target to £12,000.
The appeal has been significantly strengthened through the Aviva Match Funding Programme, which doubles every donation until the match funding pot runs out. With this boost, a donation of £19.66 can now provide two emergency winter beds, offering a safe, warm place to sleep, a hot meal, and vital support during the harshest months.
The charity stresses that the service offers ‘more than just a bed’; it provides immediate safety, dignity, and a compassionate welcome.
National charity Shelter recently reported that 382,000 people nationwide, and one in every 113 residents in Milton Keynes, are experiencing homelessness. The figures highlight why public support is more vital than ever, says UnityMK.
This winter marks the 12th year of UnityMK’s night shelters. Alongside emergency beds, the charity provides a wide range of essential daily services at its centre: warm showers, laundry facilities, emergency clothing and toiletries, qualified first aid support, phone and charging access, weekly therapy sessions, and a vital Drop-In service offering advice and practical support.
“These services are a lifeline for people sleeping rough or facing homelessness,” said Emma Johnson, CEO, UnityMK.
“We have been incredibly moved by the public’s generosity in helping us reach £8,000 so quickly. But the need is growing, and matched funding from Aviva gives us a powerful opportunity to do even more, which is why we’ve now increased our target to £12,000.
“Every penny genuinely makes a difference. The generosity of our local community keeps our doors open, our emergency beds available, and essential support services running. We are deeply grateful for every person who has contributed, and with continued support, together we can end homelessness in our city.”
