MPs fight for fairer petrol prices in Milton Keynes

MKFM is calling for fairer petrol prices for Milton Keynes drivers after an investigation revealed that residents in the city are paying around 10p more per litre than other areas.

Yesterday, MKFM contacted the local MPs urging them to write to the fuel companies who have forecourts across the city, as well as the Competition and Markets Authority.

An investigation launched by MKFM has revealed that residents within the city could be paying up to 10p more per litre than in other areas across the UK.

On Tuesday, prices at a BP petrol station in Richmond were recorded at 162.9p per litre for petrol, while the BP garage on the A421 near Emerson Valley was priced at 174.9.

Asda in Bletchley is believed to be the cheapest place to buy petrol in the city, with the price at 165.9 for unleaded - still more expensive than the London town.

When comparing Milton Keynes fuel prices against bordering towns, the BP on London Road, Northampton comes out significantly cheaper than BP garages in Milton Keynes at 160.9p and Aylesbury has fuel priced at 159.9p.

The Milton Keynes MPs have confirmed that they will be writing to the Competition and Markets Authority and BP to raise concerns following MKFM's investigation.

Ben Everitt, MP for Milton Keynes North and Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South, told MKFM: "We are writing to the Competition and Markets Authority and BP to raise our concerns over the significant regional and local variations in petrol prices with Milton Keynes seeing much higher prices than neighbouring Aylesbury and Northampton, and even London.

"Petrol prices rose earlier this year due to Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine and the Government took action by reducing fuel duty by 5p.

"We hope those in charge of petrol prices share our determination to ease the impact of the global increase in the rise of living by ensuring fair fuel prices at a local level."

One resident responded to MKFM's investigation saying: 'Glad this is being raised, definitely screams of price fixing, you have BP on one side of the road and Esso on the other side both charging the same amount, it’s been going on for years in MK.'

Another wrote: 'Scandalous prices in MK.'
