MP accuses City Council Leader of making 'party political points' over news of asylum seekers moving to Milton Keynes

The MP for Milton Keynes North has written to the Leader of Milton Keynes City Council over 'contradictory points' after it was revealed that 200 asylum seekers were moving into a Milton Keynes hotel 'imminently'.

Earlier this week, it was reported that that the Home Office is set to move over 200 single asylum seekers into a hotel in Newport Pagnell. Harben House Hotel, in Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes, will be used to house single, male asylum seekers.

Councillor Peter Marland, Labour Leader of Milton Keynes City Council told BBC that the news of an imminent move was not known to the City Council, but engagements did begin with the Home Office back in June.

The Home Office has said that it started conversations 'early' but the Leader of the City Council has criticised the government's move, stating to the BBC that "Milton Keynes City Council was told in June that this hotel might be used but had no prior warning that people were starting to move in."

This morning, Ben Everitt, MP for Milton Keynes North has written a letter to the Leader of the City Council, saying that he has seen 'contradictory points' made in the press.

Ben Everitt MP wrote: 'I am writing to you today to discuss the recent developments in Newport Pagnell, where up to 200 migrants are being moved into a local hotel.

'It has been disappointing over the last few days to see contradictory points made in the press as to who knew what and when, with regards to the decisions made by the Home Office and Milton Keynes City Council for placing these migrants into Newport Pagnell.

'While the Council has been in discussions with the Home Office over preliminary plans to place migrants into Newport Pagnell since June, further emails from the Home Office show the Council was made aware in July that the move in date would be this week.

'As I said on BBC Three Counties this morning, it's frustrating to see party political points made in the press but no efforts to address the concerns and issues our residents are right to be worried about.

'Let's put aside the party politics and work together, so that we can keep people informed and both the residents of Newport Pagnell and the migrants safe.'

MKFM have contacted Milton Keynes City Council and the local Labour party for a response.
