MKFM 106.3FM celebrates tenth UNESCO World Radio Day

Today marks World Radio Day - a UNESCO event which marks its 10th anniversary and more than 110 years of radio.

This years themes are Evolution, Innovation and Connection.

During the global pandemic, radio has never been more important in connecting and supporting local communities.

Audrey Azoulay, director general of UNESCO, has said about World Radio Day: "Without radio, the right to information and freedom of expression and, with them, fundamental freedoms would be weakened, as would cultural diversity, since community radio stations are the voices of the voiceless."

MKFM 106.3 will celebrate it's tenth birthday later this year since being founded by former Horizon Radio members, after they were taken over by the Heart Network.

Since Monday, 7th September 2015 the station has been broadcasting on 106.3FM.

Darren Dorrington, who presented the first breakfast show on the FM frequency five years ago, told us: “World Radio Day is a fantastic opportunity for everyone in the industry to celebrate the day.

"Radio continues to evolve and the pandemic has shown that radio is as important as ever.”
