MK Council calls for Volunteer Champions to celebrate 2020 European City of Sport Award

A Volunteer Champion scheme has been launched by Milton Keynes Council to celebrate the town's European City of Sport 2020 title.

If you’re passionate about sport in Milton Keynes, then this is your opportunity to play an active role in this year’s celebrations.

As a Volunteer Champion, you’ll help deliver exciting sporting and cultural activities (virtually and in-person when it’s safe), inspire others and develop your professional skills, including:

    - Recording virtual #MK20in20 ‘at home’ exercise routines to share on social media to inspire others
    - Attend events, virtually and in-person when safe, to help deliver physical activity initiatives and projects organised by the European City of Sport project team
    - Be mentored by Olympic silver medallist Gail Emms MBE
    - Motivate friends, family and your community to get involved in physical activity

Anybody aged 16 and over can become a European City of Sport Volunteer Champion, all you need is a passion for sport and Milton Keynes. If you’re interested, please submit an application form by Thursday 25th June.

Applications opened during Volunteers’ Week 2020, the nationwide campaign to celebrate the invaluable work of volunteers across the United Kingdom.

If you’re successful, you’ll be provided with a free full day’s training and European City of Sport 2020 branded kit.

All successful applicants will be trained and monitored throughout by professionals at the MK Dons Sport and Education Trust to ensure appropriate safeguarding at all times.

Councillor Carole Baume, Milton Keynes Council Cabinet Member responsible for Sport, said: "I’m really excited about MK’s European City of Sport 2020 Volunteer Champion scheme."

"Throughout this year, we’ve already heard from so many fantastic local sports and leisure groups and their participants, and heard about many opportunities to get involved in sport and the benefits this brings to people."

She added: "The Volunteer Champion scheme will allow more passionate people in MK to get involved in our European City of Sport year, to motivate their peers and gain added life skills."

She concluded: "Please submit an application form before 25 June and play an active part in our sporting celebrations."
