Milton Keynes University Hospital responds to complaints over woman smoking outside children's ward

After a trip to Milton Keynes University Hospital, one visitor noticed a woman smoking within a clearly marked no-smoking zone - nearby a children's intensive care ward.

Taking to Twitter to describe his experiences, Will Fealey said: "I rarely get angry but today I must admit I did with this woman smoking outside MK Hospital whilst stood next to a sign explaining that above her head is the children’s intensive care windows where the most delicate little babies are often struggling to stay alive.

"It makes me so incredibly upset as I know first hand her disgusting second-hand smoke (and endless other selfish idiots like her) goes into the rooms of these babies.

"I’m sure she either wasn’t aware or blissfully ignorant to the facts but I’m compelled to try and help sort this crap as I keep seeing it happen outside hospital doors but I just don’t know what else can be done, so social media is the only option, for now, to raise awareness and push other people to speak out against it if you see it.

"The hospital is moving the children’s ward as we speak but it’s not expected to complete for several years but that’s beside the point, it happens at the main entrances as well where those suffering from all sorts of illnesses are forced to inhale 2nd hand smoke as they enter or leave.

"The hospital and I’m sure many others across the country is supposedly smoke-free sites but it would seem people do whatever the hell they want these days whilst not giving a toss about others, where has our humanity gone?

"After my rant, I’m hopeful she will never do it again and I’m sure she’s had a crap day herself (so for that reason I blur her face) given that she’s clearly a patient at A&E at 6am but this is an endless battle with people thinking it’s OK to smoke next to doors or windows of buildings like hospitals and shopping centres."

Responding to the issues raised, Milton Keynes University Hospital said: "Milton Keynes University Hospital is an entirely smoke-free site. This means patients, visitors and staff are not permitted to smoke anywhere on the hospital grounds. This includes all outdoor areas, including the car parks.

"We do, of course, try to ensure this is adhered to by everyone on-site, through our smoke-free campaign posters, website pages and our security team.

"We will continue to create an entirely smoke-free zone around our hospital as a positive step towards creating a healthier environment across our site. We will be sure to remind our visitors and staff through internal and external communications of this smoke ban.

"Unfortunately, the path around the hospital is not our site, and we have no say if people can smoke in this area. This area is considered a safe area for individuals to smoke, as it is not on hospital grounds. We will be sure to put up more signage and banners to promote this ban."
