Milton Keynes teacher receives Black Excellence Award

Youth leader recognised in major honours.

A teacher from Milton Keynes Academy has won a top honour at the recent Black Excellence Awards.

Adrian Francis, a leader in grassroots sport and youth development, was awarded the Mentor of the Year Award at last week’s celebration of achievement, resilience and service across Milton Keynes.

Adrian’s influence extends beyond the classroom through his role at MK City Football Club, his commitment to mentoring young people, and his national recognition as an Inspirational Role Model in referee development.

His work consistently creates pathways, builds confidence and empowers young people to reach their potential, making him a true role model within the Milton Keynes community.

Adrian’s mother, Chris Hayter, founder of The Oasis Project – The Gambia, was awarded the Unsung Hero Award, recognising years of selfless dedication to community development both locally and internationally.

Through her charity work, Chris has transformed opportunities for children and families in Bakau, The Gambia, while building strong links with schools, volunteers and supporters in the UK. Her work is driven by compassion, resilience and action rather than recognition, making this award a deeply deserved acknowledgement of her quiet but lasting impact.

The awards evening, at Wilton Hall, Bletchley, honoured individuals who quietly and consistently uplift others, strengthen communities and inspire positive change. It was a reminder that meaningful impact often begins at a local level, through dedication, leadership and service, and that when values are shared across generations, their influence can reach far beyond one family and into the heart of the wider community.
