Milton Keynes swans covered in oily residue have been 'rescued and cleaned up'

Two swans coated in oily residue are being 'rescued and cleaned up' by the Swan Sanctuary this morning (18/2).

This is according to a local man, Rich, that lives along the Grand Union Canal in Milton Keynes near to where the swans were initially spotted.

It appears that oil had spilled, or been dumped, into the water near Great Linford.

Rich, who runs a Facebook page called 'by Bike & Boat', shared images of the swans on social media - and said that he had reported the incident to the relevant organisations.

He also told his followers that the Swan Sanctuary would be coming to "rescue and clean up" the swans at 11am today (18/2).

Helen, who volunteers for the Swan Sanctuary, has taken the swans to Shepperton where they will be properly cleaned and treated. It is expected that they will return to the stretch of the canal in a few days, although it is still contaminated with oil.

The Canal and River Trust has also been informed about the spill; the organisation says that the local teams will "look into the oil spill and get this cleaned up".

But Rich claims that no action has allegedly been taken by the Canal and River Trust so far.

He said: "Well 20 hours after I originally reported this oil spill on the Grand Union Canal at Bridge 75, we have still not seen anyone from the Canal and River Trust to come and assess the environmental damage."

Rich is calling on residents to "help give them a nudge" by calling the organisation on 0800 47 999 47 to report the incident.

He joked: "Well, they do say that the squeaky wheel gets the grease!"
