Milton Keynes supermarket forced to close after travellers set up illegal encampment on car park

A supermarket in Milton Keynes was allegedly forced to shut last night (22/6), after an illegal encampment was set up in its car park.

MKFM understands that the Tesco Superstore in Wolverton had to close its doors last night, after travellers pitched up an illegal encampment on the premises.

Caravans were reportedly parked up in the supermarket's car park, with residents taking to Facebook to report that the supermarket was closing.

Residents have also reported that Asda in Wolverton was closed early, currently it is not confirmed if this was related.

The supermarket car parks are part of private land.

Both supermarkets are open as normal today (23 June).

The news follows several stories on illegal encampments in the city, with travellers currently located in a number of places including the Furzton Lake area, Tattenhoe and Greenleys.

Last year, a secondary school was forced to shut due to the school site not being 'safe for students or staff'.

Around 30 caravans made their way over to the secondary school's field.

Milton Keynes City Council said they are working closely with the police and monitoring the current situation around the city.

Ben Everitt MP told MKFM: “Thames Valley Police are keeping me informed of the situation with the unauthorised traveller encampments and they are taking action.

“I was fully supportive of the Government strengthening the powers our police have to deal with these situations through the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022.

“I am confident our local police force will continue to use those powers proportionately and appropriately.”
