Milton Keynes students experience the magic of the opera for the first time at iconic venue

Students from Sir Herbert Leon Academy enjoyed a visit to The Royal Opera House for a magical performance of La Bohème.

Staff and students from Sir Herbert Leon Academy, part of the AET network of schools, were taken on a trip to the Royal Opera House for a performance of La Bohème.

In total, 150 of the Milton Keynes students went to watch Giacomo Puccini's timeless masterpiece in a trip organised in partnership with the Arts Council.

For many of the students, this excursion marked their first experience with both the majestic opera house as well as the world of opera, providing a unique opportunity to broaden their horizons and experience something utterly different.

The students, who were eager to immerse themselves in the cultural experience, were amazed by the interior and magnitude of the iconic building.

Before the curtain rose, the students received a brief but insightful introduction to La Bohème, as well as background on the singing, and how best to enjoy the performance from one of the stars.

Paul Read, Assistant Principal at Sir Herbert Leon Academy, who organised the trip, said: “The trip to the Royal Opera House for La Bohème was an unequivocal success, providing students with an unparalleled opportunity to witness a world-class production in such a prestigious venue. As the lights dimmed and the curtain ascended, our students were transported into a world of unique melodies and powerful storytelling.

“This cultural experience was so important for broadening our young people’s cultural horizons as well as hopefully fostering a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts.

“It’s clear to see the impact of this trip went far beyond the walls of the Royal Opera House. For these students who had never been to the opera before, La Boheme was such an incredible experience. Talking to the students after the performance showed they had newfound appreciation for how opera can tell a story, as well as the amazing power those performers showed.”
