Milton Keynes set to receive £2m to tackle homelessness

    Today (21/12), the Government announced £315.8 million in funding through the Homelessness Prevention Grant that will be made available to local authorities over the next few years.

    Milton Keynes is set to receive receive £1,990,412 through the Homelessness Prevention Grant and £32,702 through the Domestic Abuse new burdens.

    The Government's Spending Review has committed £2 billion to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping over the next three years.

    The grant will be provided to authorities upfront and can be used flexibly by councils to deliver their homelessness and rough sleeping strategies - for example.

    This may include offering financial support for people to find a new home, providing temporary accommodation, working with landlords to prevent evictions or other measures to prevent homelessness.

    Commenting, Iain Stewart MP said: “The £2m of funding for Milton Keynes underlines the Government’s commitment to preventing homelessness and ending rough sleeping for good.

    “I am hopeful that the local authority will utilise this funding, from the Conservative Government, to help those who are vulnerable or are in need.”

    Milton Keynes MP, Ben Everitt, said: "I'm extremely proud of the work me and other MPs did with Crisis and other homelessness charities last year to get priority housing status for domestic abuse victims written into the Domestic Abuse Bill and it's wonderful to see it in action right here in Milton Keynes.

    "Nobody should ever have to choose between staying in an abusive household or being homeless so it was absolutely the right thing to do and I'm glad the Government listened and support is included in today’s funding.

    “This extra funding to tackle homelessness is very welcome and will help towards our aim to bring an end to homelessness and rough sleeping.”
