Milton Keynes residents urged to partake in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

As gardens begin to wake up after winter, homeowners across Miton Keynes are being encouraged to think ahead for bird nesting season and to take part in this weekend's RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

Ray Brown of Browns Tree Solutions says the weeks before spring are a valuable moment to pause, notice what wildlife is already using our gardens, and plan any tree or hedge work responsibly.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2026 invites people to spend one hour watching their garden, balcony, or a local park at any point between 23 and 25 January. It's a great way to get children interested in our birdlife, too.

Participants should count birds that land and submit results even if they saw nothing. The data helps build a clearer picture of how UK birds are faring, and it is an accessible way for households to reconnect with nature.

Nesting activity in UK gardens typically increases from around March through summer, and trees, hedges and dense shrubs can become vital nesting sites. That is why Browns Tree Solutions is urging residents to avoid rushed decisions and instead plan maintenance work thoughtfully, with wildlife in mind.

“People often ask me, ‘Does nesting season mean I can’t do anything in the garden?’ It’s more nuanced than that,” Ray said, “The sensible approach is to plan ahead, and when work is needed, to carry it out responsibly so we reduce the risk of disturbing active nests.”

“The Big Garden Birdwatch is the perfect warm-up. Give it an hour, you’ll be surprised what you spot, and it can change how you see your own hedge or tree.”

Browns Tree Solutions is encouraging homeowners who are considering tree pruning or hedge maintenance to arrange a professional assessment early, especially as nesting season approaches. This helps work to be scheduled sensibly, avoids last-minute disruption, and supports a healthier garden for both people and wildlife.
