Milton Keynes ranked one of the nation's top shopping destinations

Milton Keynes has been ranked one of the nation's top shopping destinations, according to a new report.

It ranked 16th out of a possible 1,000 retail centres across the country meaning that, pre covid, shoppers would happily travel from across the region to visit.

The city is home to several shopping centres, including the popular centrally located intu and centre:mk, which in normal times see thousands of visitors per day.

When non-essential retail reopened in December 2020 the centre:mk saw footfall increase massively, over 240%, and even outperformed Oxford Street.

The new study, published by Harper Dennis Hobbs, reflects this and demonstrates just how popular the shopping quarters can be.

Inner-city shopping locations, such as Canary Wharf, were lower down the list - showing how the coronavirus pandemic, and subsequent lockdowns, have shifted the nation's shopping habits with more people staying local.

That is expected to be the reason why Beaconsfield is top of the list followed by Henley-On-Thames.

Andy Metherell, Head of Retail Consultancy at Harper Dennis Hobs, said: “The most vital retail centres currently provide services that are essential to people’s lives, such as grocers and pharmacies.

"These essential retailers have been able to trade throughout the strictest lockdowns, and consumers have not been willing or able to travel far to visit these stores. Shopping patterns have therefore changed significantly since the start of the pandemic, and consumers’ local high streets are benefitting at the expense of major destinations.”
