Milton Keynes MP to launch 'Green MK Grant' to find innovative green ideas

Local MP for Milton Keynes North Mark Lancaster is set to launch a 'Green MK grant' this year to reward young people who come up with innovative green ideas.

Speaking to MKFM, he said: "Over the past few years the state of the natural environment has risen higher and higher on the political agenda, and rightly so. I am incredibly lucky to have visited 140 countries on this earth and I always find myself in awe of our natural environment. The recent work by Sky Ocean Rescue and Sir David Attenborough among many others has opened all of our eyes, more so than ever, to the wonders of our planet and to the threats it faces."

"It is something I have always been passionate about, but in recent years I have become more and more concerned with the rapid damage we are doing to the earth. I desperately want my children and their children to enjoy the natural beauty of our planet just as much as I have. Moreover, I want them to live on a clean, sustainable and stable planet where they can flourish."

"The Government has set out its plan to build a Britain where the next generation can enjoy a better life than the one that went before it. We are taking big strides in doing that from reducing the use of plastics, improving the way we recycle and protecting wild animals through the ban on ivory and conserving huge areas of our oceans."

"I strongly believe there is more we can all do on a local level. In Milton Keynes we are incredibly lucky to have an abundance and variety of landscapes and habitats. We are proud of how green we are as a place, we have somehow planted more than 22 million trees!"

"I believe that gives us an unrivalled opportunity to be a leader in the fight against climate change. That is why I am launching a new project in 2019 called ‘The Green MK Grant’."

"My plan is to find young people from Milton Keynes who have new ideas on how to reduce our levels of waste, lower our energy use or anything else that can help MK contribute to tackling climate change. In the New Year I will be writing to local businesses and asking them to invest some money into a prize pot. I will then write to all schools and MK College to invite ideas from students. Three of the best and most achievable ideas will receive a grant to try and make their proposal a reality."

"Britain has always been a world leader in understanding and protecting the natural world. Now I want us in Milton Keynes to become a world leader. I really believe we can help create a better world for ourselves and our children. I will be setting out more details soon, but if you are interested and would like to be a part of the project please do get in touch."
