Milton Keynes MP achieves win for survivors of domestic abuse

A campaign driven by MK Central MP Emily Darlington means that survivors of domestic abuse will no longer have to pay to keep their address private when seeking financial assistance.

Emily used social media to share details of a letter received by Minster Sarah Sackman from the Ministry of Justice, which said: 'Your engagement has helped to highlight the real-world impact of these fees, and this legislation reflects our shared commitment to remove such obstacles for victims.'

Calling the change, 'huge, amazing news,' Emily said: “Many of you will know I have been campaigning to make sure that when people are fleeing domestic abuse situations with just the clothes on their backs and the financial debt that they are often in, often laiden on them by their abusers, they used to have to pay to keep their future addresses secret when they went through insolvency orders, when they went through bankruptcy.

“Today it is being laid in Parliament that the fee will be waived. This is the best news and it will be keeping people safe when they are fleeing their abusers, which is often the time that is most dangerous for them,” she added.

“Huge thank you to Sarah Sackman and to Money Wellness who I have been working with on this campaign.”

Subject to Parliamentary consent, the change will be in force from November 17.
