Milton Keynes memorial for Prince Phillip to be held at MK Rose

The Mayor of Milton Keynes and the Mayoress will lay flowers at MK Rose in Campbell Park today in memorial of Prince Phillip.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning at Windsor Castle, it was announced by the Palace this afternoon (09/04).

Since the announcement of his death, sympathies have poured in from leaders across the UK and the world, and the Mayor of Milton Keynes, Councillor Andrew Geary has realised a statement this evening.

He spoke of how remarkable the Prince was, his sense of humour and the day he met him on a Royal visit to Milton Keynes.

He said: "I well remember on a visit to Milton Keynes when he accompanied HM the Queen on a Royal Visit that he joked with myself as a relatively new political leader and with the leader of another party about the status of the “Hung Council” saying that’s what we politicians did to each other!

"That was the same day that he looked one individual in the line up to greet the Royal couple up and down and exclaimed in a bold voice 'Good God, you must be the architect!'

"The fact that he was absolutely right made it even more humorous!

"And then followed the most memorable part of the visit as the Duke got stuck in the lifts at the newly opened Ramada Hotel in the hub with the then Deputy Mayor!

"In his own inimitable way, the Duke fluffed it off with a suitably flippant comment."

Milton Keynes residents wishing to leave flowers in Memorium of the Duke of Edinburgh can do so at Milton Keynes Rose at Campbell Park.

In a statement from Parks Trust, the charity which cares for the park, they have asked that the public make sure to appropriately socially distance when leaving flowers and to take all flowers out of the plastic wrapping.

A volunteering team will be on hand to guide locals in where to place flowers and to ensure the process is safe for all.

Candles, balloons and Chinese lanterns may not be released or left at the memorial, but battery-operated candles can be left as a replacement.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, they will be no Book of Condolences in Milton Keynes, any residents wishing to enter into a national Book of Condolences can do so online on the Royal website.
