A man been jailed for eight years for rape following a trial at Aylesbury Crown Court.
Craig Burnikell, aged 26, of St Dunstans, Coffee Hall was sentenced to eight years imprisonment on Tuesday (13/6) at Aylesbury Crown Court.
Burnikell was previously found guilty by a majority jury verdict of one count of rape, following a four-day trial at the same court which concluded on 17 April this year.
On 13 December 2019, the victim was out in Milton Keynes with friends.
The victim and Burnikell shared a taxi to Burnikell’s house, when the victim realised she had lost her belongings, so stayed the night.
The victim fell asleep and woke up as Burnikell raped her.
Burnikell was arrested on 20 December 2019 and was charged on 18 February 2021.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Kay O’Connor, of Milton Keynes CID, said: “I am pleased that Burnikell has been found guilty and been brought to justice.
“The victim has supported the investigation throughout and she should be highly commended for the bravery and resilience she has shown.
“Thames Valley Police is absolutely committed to tackling violence against women and girls.
“Burnikell will serve a substantial prison sentence as a result of his behaviour, and I hope that this conviction and sentence will serve as some solace to his victim.”
