Milton Keynes Libraries promote children's reading challenge ahead of World Book Day

In the lead up to World Book Day, libraries across Milton Keynes have encouraged young people to sign up to the 200 million minutes challenge that aims to get young people across the country reading.

The 200 million minutes is a recent scheme that aims to encourage a love of reading and make sure all children and young people, irrespective of their background, challenge or need, are engaging with literacy and lead brighter futures.

The challenge sees children read as much as they can throughout the month of March, with an adult logging their daily minutes read onto the website.

Any and all reading counts towards children's total minutes. Anything from paperbacks, magazines, comics, plays, newspapers and e-books are all valid options. Children can read on their own, as part of a group or with an adult.

Lots of prizes are up for grabs to the readers with the highest amount of average minutes read throughout the course of the competition.

The challenge will run from World Book Day (Thursday 4th March 2021) until Children's Book Day (Wednesday 31st March 2021).

On Twitter, MK Libraries urged local children to take part, they posted: "The 200 million minutes challenge starts on 4 March.

"It's a scheme to encourage a love of reading and make sure all children and young people are engaging with literacy for brighter futures.

"Sign up now and be ready to log your reading minutes online."
