Milton Keynes lady thanks community for wonderful support of her Doorstep Challenge

Nine years ago, local lady Mellissa Watson created the Doorstep Challenge in Milton Keynes – asking for donations for families who deserved a little boost, to raise a little festive cheer. As a result of people's generosity, she was able to support 43 families here in the new city.

“I did it because I had previously gone through a very tough time myself and had to rely on foodbanks and crisis support. This year, I spoke to my children about it and they wanted to bring it back — and I’m so proud that they got involved.

“I think it's super important to give back when you can,” she said.

When Mellissa revived the doorstep challenge, she was staggered by the kindness of others.

“The people of MK came together in a way I will never forget,” she said, “I asked for donations to help families who might be struggling — and the response was unbelievable. My home was filled floor-to-ceiling with toys, toiletries, food, children’s items, clothing, baby things, and even brand-new iPads, PlayStations and Xboxes.

“I spent days and nights packing hampers, but the real reason this happened was because of the people of Milton Keynes. Thanks to this amazing community, my children, my partner and I were able to put together and deliver hampers to 100 families.”

Mellissa's work, and the giving nature of others means those families will now have festive cheer where there otherwise might have been very little to look forward to.

“I just want to send a heartfelt thank you to every single person who donated or supported the challenge in any way.

“Community still exists in this city,” Mellissa added, “And if you’re struggling, please don’t be afraid to reach out. You never know what help is available until you ask.”
