When she reached for her usual brand of deodorant, Abbey Humphreys was ready to roll and go, as usual.
“I have been using Mitchum products for years, they are the only deodorant for me that kept sweating at bay,” she told MKFM, “I've tried all these fancy ones on social media, but nothing compares.”
But Abbey, 35, from Deanshanger was left in agony when she popped on the roll-on following one shower: “My armpits were on fire, they were burning and furiously red,” she said, “I washed the deodorant off, which was still burning, smothered my armpits in sudocrem and took an antihistamine thinking I'd had a random reaction.
“My armpits were raw for days – just sitting down was painful.”
Abbey waited until the pain had eased and healing had begun before using the product again.
“I thought I'd buy a different Mitchum scent as maybe I'd been sent a dupe or a dodgy one, and the same thing happened again.
Abbey shared her story and many others made contact to say that they too had been affected by the product, with similar symptoms.
“One friend has been to their GP for antifungal medication thinking it was thrush or similar!” she told us.
Mitchum admitted to an issue, which they say is now resolved.
“We are aware of reports from some customers regarding reactions to select batches of Mitchum 48-hour 100ml Roll-On antiperspirant and deodorant,” said a Mitchum spokesperson, “No other products in our portfolio are impacted. Consumer well being is always our priority, and we are truly sorry some of our customers have experienced temporary irritation. This is not the experience they expect from us.
“We take this kind of feedback extremely seriously and have worked hard to investigate the cause. We want to reassure there has been no change to the formula of our products, but we have identified a change in the manufacturing process affecting one of our raw materials. This has impacted how the roll-on interacts with the skin of some users. We can confirm this issue has now been resolved and we are working to remove the small amount of product remaining on shelf.
The spokesperson added: “In addition, we have reverted to the original manufacturing process to ensure no other batches are affected. We ask that any consumers experiencing issues contact our Customer Care team and give us a chance to make this right.”
But Abbey says her negative experience has seen her lose confidence in Mitchum: “I am nervous to try their products again despite my loyalty for many, many years. I feel like their acknowledgement and apology is a bit late and like a tick box to say they've done it.
“Imagine if this was a product used on children.”
