Milton Keynes good value for a 24-hour getaway

City shows favourably in list of city-break costs.

Milton Keynes is among the most reasonable destinations in Britain to visit for a one night getaway break, a new survey has found.

The city, which is known for its vast array of hotels, restaurants and leisure facilities, features on a new nationwide study of prices for a 24-hour getaway. Researchers found that a one-night stay in MK would cost £119 per person.

That figure represents great value for money when compared with list-topper Aberdeen, which costs £323 for the 24-hour stay, Armagh at £271, Westminster (London) at £252 and the £238 needed for Bath.

The study, by experts at Ireland Prestige Tours, ranked UK cities based on the total cost of a 24 hour visit, using a combined cost score rather than a quality or affordability index. Each city’s final position reflects the estimated amount a visitor would spend for one day and one overnight stay.

The study compared average restaurant meal prices, beer and coffee costs, local transport fares, standard taxi rates, one night hotel prices for June, and entry fees for each city’s main tourist attraction.

These figures were combined to calculate a total 24 hour visitor cost, revealing where a short overnight stay comes at the highest price.

Milton Keynes was placed 57th out of 63 cities surveyed. Bottom placed Nottingham showed a cost of £100 for the getaway break.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen the cost of everyday travel expenses in the UK rise quietly but consistently, and short breaks are where travellers feel it most,” said travel specialist Denise McCabe,

“A single meal out, a couple of drinks, a taxi and one night in a hotel can add up far quicker than people expect, especially in cities with strong tourist demand.

“Planning a short UK break has become much more about timing and choices. A busy weekend, a premium attraction or relying on taxis can quickly turn what feels like a simple overnight trip into a surprisingly expensive one.”
