Milton Keynes City Council colleagues discovered a live cockroach infestation and poor hygiene conditions during a routine inspection of the premises.
The City Council’s Environmental Health Officers identified the infestation at Dessert Island in Bletchley, which has been ordered to pay £7,389.82 in fines and costs after serious hygiene breaches at the premises on Queensway in November 2024.
Due to the imminent risk to public health, officers served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice requiring the business to close immediately. This was confirmed by a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order granted by Milton Keynes Magistrates’ Court on 22 November 2024.
The business was allowed to reopen only once officers were satisfied that the risks had been resolved and appropriate measures were in place.
The seriousness of the breaches led to a prosecution at Milton Keynes Magistrates’ Court on 16 January 2026.
The company was fined £4,000, with a £1,600 victim surcharge and £1,789.82 in full costs, totalling £7,389.82. The company director received a two‑year conditional discharge and a £26 victim surcharge.
“Our Environmental Health team play a vital role in protecting public health, and the work they do is essential for maintaining the standards we expect from food businesses in Milton Keynes," said Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, Cllr Mick Legg, "Dessert Island has taken steps to address the issues identified, and colleagues are now satisfied with the works that have been undertaken.”
