Winner to supply Downing Street with festive tree.
A nationwide competition to find a Christmas tree fit for display outside the Prime Minister’s office has taken place on a Milton Keynes farm.
Stoke Goldington Christmas Trees, near Newport Pagnell, have planned for years to host the important Christmas Tree Grower of the Year contest, and were granted the opportunity to welcome hundreds of competitors all vying for the top accolade.
The industry event for Christmas tree growers in the UK is organised annually by the Christmas Tree Growers Association. Their 300 members promote tree growing in an environmental and sustainable way.
Each year the champion tree is installed outside 10 Downing Street in London while top prize for best Festive Wreath of the Year has its creation placed on the PM’s famous front door.
Stoke Goldington Christmas Trees always enter the competition and this year won a runners-up prize in the ‘Photo of the Year’ category.
But for owners Chris and Jenny Letts, the biggest accolade was being able to host the annual competition, which took place earlier this month.
“We always enter our trees in various categories,” said Jenny. “But this year we wanted to host the contest. We have been working towards it for a while, and this we were ready – we had the space to do it.”
Cadeby Tree Trust in Leicestershire won the accolade of providing the Christmas tree for Downing Street while the Festive Wreath winner was Strawson Woodland, from Lincolnshire.
