Milton Keynes Dons sign three top players in January spree

    Curtis Nelson

There could be more to come, says team manager.

The arrival of a new defender into MK Dons FC yesterday brought to three the total of players joining the club in the last week.

And there’s a good possibility that more players could be heading to the city’s football club during this January’s transfer window, head coach Paul Warne has said.

Centre back Curtis Nelson joined the Dons yesterday on a permanent transfer from Championship side Derby County. The 32-year-old joins Warne’s side as the third signing of the current transfer window, joining Ben Wiles and Jay Matete, who signed for MK Dons last week.

An experienced player who has featured regularly in the Championship, League One and League Two, Nelson racked up 83 appearances for Derby, scoring four goals. That included playing every minute in Derby’s promotion-winning season from League One in 23/24.

Jay Matete has featured 25 times for Sunderland, having signed for the club from Fleetwood Town in 2022.

Despite his age, the 24-year-old player already has plenty of experience to his name, including 45 appearances for League One side Bolton Wanderers during a loan spell there, and 22 appearances for fellow League One side Plymouth Argyle.

Ben Wiles, 26, was a regular in the starting eleven during his time at Huddersfield, racking up more than 100 appearances. Prior to his move to West Yorkshire, Ben enjoyed a successful spell with Rotherham United, his hometown club.

He progressed through the youth system with the Millers before signing professional terms in 2017. Wiles went on to play 193 times for Rotherham, where he was managed by Paul Warne for the first time.

“When you get new players in the building it’s exciting,” said Paul Warne. “It’s a relief and Christmas Day and everything all at once.

“Curtis is a really good organiser, Jay is an athlete who has got goals in him and Ben is a young man with good pace and an eye for goal.”

Milton Keynes Dons are back at home for two fixtures in quick succession, taking on Shrewsbury Town on Saturday 24th January and Bristol Rovers on Tuesday 27th January at Stadium MK. Tickets are on sale now.
