A local councillor has resigned after being convicted of child neglect at Aylesbury Crown Court on Thursday (4/2).

Shammi Akter, who was a Labour Councillor for Woughton and Fishermead, avoided jail and received an 8 month suspended sentence, after admitting the charge last year.

The court heard Ms Akter had left her 4-year-old son at home alone for 4 hours while she went to work.

The 38-year-old must complete 150 hours of unpaid work, and wear an electronic tag between 7pm and 6am for six months.

Akter previously tried to restrict the press from sharing her name but this was overruled by the court judge.

It was reported by another local media outlet that the court heard she was allegedly dependent on her income as a councillor and feared she would lose her position if her name was published.

Following Thursday’s sentencing, Milton Keynes Council said Akter’s resignation came into immediate effect.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Pete Marland, added that she was also no longer a member of the Labour group.

He said: "Shammi Akter is no longer a member of the Labour Group.

"It would be right, given the serious nature of the matter, that she resigns her position on MK Council."
