Milton Keynes Council warn residents against travelling due to weather conditions

Following weather and flood warnings from the Met Office last night (30/01), the local council has advised against travel unless absolutely necessary.

Due to recent heavy rainfall in the area, the River Great Ouse overflowed in certain areas of Milton Keynes yesterday. This coupled with the low temperatures outside has led to many road surfaces becoming dangerous to drive on.

Milton Keynes Council acknowledged the risk to travellers, as they tweeted: “Heavy, persistent rain has caused some severe localised flooding in MK. Highway officers and Ringway MK are supporting residents and taking action to keep roads safe.

“If you see a road closed or flood sign, do not ignore it.

“Road surface temperatures [fell below 0 last night] so the gritters will be out. Lots of surface water on the roads which will turn to ice so take extra care if out and about.”

Ringway MK has worked throughout the night to ensure that as many roads as possible were gritted and safe to drive on. They gave an updated on the process as they posted online: “Our gritting team were out at 8pm and again at 4am.

“A very frosty icy start with floodwaters on some roads. Remember essential journeys only and spend time cleaning windscreens to ensure your journey and others is a safe one.”
