Milton Keynes Council recruiting locals to become poll clerks for the upcoming local elections

Milton Keynes Council is searching for any locals looking to support democracy and earn some extra money by becoming a poll clerk in the upcoming 6th May local elections.

Describing the opportunity, a spokesperson from Milton Keynes Council said: "Milton Keynes has Police and Crime Commissioner, Borough Council and Parish Elections scheduled for Thursday 6 May 2021.

"We use various buildings such as churches and community halls as polling stations across the borough so that people can vote in person if they wish to do so.

"Polling stations are run by a Presiding Officer who is supported by one or more Poll Clerks. Poll Clerks are required to work from 6:30am to 10:30pm and are paid for their time. If you work for MKC, you don’t need to take leave to work on election duties, but must have the agreement of your line manger to be released. Training will be delivered remotely online.

"The elections will be in the Spring when the lockdown restrictions is expected to be significantly less than they are now. Nevertheless, we have been working hard with MKC Public Health, Regulatory Services, Health & Safety and Facilities colleagues to ensure that our venues are all Covid compliant and follow Public Health England and Electoral Commission guidance."

The main duties that the poll clerks are expected to perform are as follows:

    • Assist with polling station layout and prepare for the opening of polls

    • Give voters clear instructions on how to mark ballot papers

    • Mark electoral register and corresponding number lists (CNLs)

    • Issue ballot papers as directed by Presiding Officer

If you would like to help with this year’s election working then the Council is inviting you to complete a survey and they will be in touch with you as soon as possible.

The sign-up form can be accessed by clicking here and is estimated to only take a few minutes to fill out.
