Milton Keynes Council could review parking zones following reduction in revenue

There could be a review into purple and red parking zones in Central Milton Keynes.

In an exclusive interview with MKFM, the Leader of Milton Keynes Council, Peter Marland, said there could possibly be a review of the parking zones in Central Milton Keynes.

It has been revealed that there has been a reduction in revenue when it comes to parking, especially in Central Milton Keynes.

For around 6/7 consecutive years, the prices of CMK parking zones have been held at the same price. With purple spaces being 50p per hour and red being premium at £2 an hour.

MK Council has been working closely with centre:mk, speaking with them almost weekly and say: "There is no push from them to reduce parking fees."

Cllr Peter Marland said: "It is a complete fallacy that parking charges have a massive impact on the city centre."

Since the beginning of the pandemic, many people across the country have been no longer heading into the office five days a week, creating a change to how parking spaces are used across Milton Keynes.

With Central Milton Keynes being home to many offices, where many car parks were once full, some spaces are now always free.

Cllr Peter Marland explained: "We need to work out what the future of the city centre will look like, we need to be flexible and we need to be quick enough to react."

He continues: "My concern is with companies that are the soul of Milton Keynes, say they employ 30 people and have a big office space in Milton Keynes, based in the city centre and now 15/20 of their staff are working from home. It's is that sort of change that I think will impact the city centre.

"Not many places were able to replace House of Fraser with Harrods Beauty or Debenhams with Next Home and Beauty. We are really lucky and need to stop saying that our shops are struggling, it is difficult for them but we have a really strong offer.

Cllr Peter Marland told MKFM that changing parking zones around and pricing structure around passes is something that could be reviewd by the Council.

Where many employees are now working from home, weekly and monthly passes are no longer needed. MK Council will be looking to review two-daily passes or three-daily passes to offer easier parking for those employees that only need it a few days a week.

They may also review purple and red zones in the future.
