Milton Keynes Council has recently begun construction on a number of new council homes for families and older people through Bletchley and Fishermead.
The Council is building five family homes on two empty plots of land in Talland Avenue, Fishermead, among which include the first five-bed council properties built in Milton Keynes for several years. Two bungalows specially equipped for the elderly are also being built on undeveloped land in Rowlands Close, Bletchley.
The new homes in Rowlands Close are being built by a local housing developer based in Bletchley, creating more jobs for local people.
Initial proposals are also in place for a further five new family Council homes on a disused garage site on Walnut Drive in Bletchley. Demolition of the garages has been completed and a planning application for the scheme has been submitted for approval.
All 12 of MK Council’s newest homes, both in Fishermead and Bletchley, will take the Council a step forward in reaching its Council housebuilding target. More than 60 new Council homes are going to be built in Netherfield in another MK Council housebuilding project set to start later this year, which includes a large number of homes built for people with physical disabilities.
Cllr Emily Darlington. the Council's Cabinet Member for Adults, Housing and Healthy Communities, explained the importance of the move as she said: "There’s a desperate housing shortage in Milton Keynes, especially for families and people with additional needs, and it’s important that we build Council homes for local people.
"I’m pleased that work has started on site in Fishermead and Bletchley to build our newest Council homes, and I’m grateful to local residents and Parish and Town Councils for their help in shaping our proposals.
"All these homes will be built with the latest renewable energy technologies, including personal electric vehicle charging points and the highest elements of insulation, as part of our commitment to become a carbon-neutral city by 2030.
"These new council homes are part of delivering on our Council Home plan agreed last year, which includes the biggest investment in improving current Council homes and the most ambitious building of new Council homes since the days of the Development Corporation."
