Milton Keynes City Council helps young carers plug into digital support

Milton Keynes City Council is building on the dedicated Young Carers Service, strengthening the support available to children and young people who regularly look after a family member.

The council has teamed up with the Digital Poverty Alliance, a registered charity that is running Tech4Young Carers, a programme funded by E2BN that provides refurbished laptops, internet connections and bespoke training to young carers.

Being able to do things online like schoolwork, make appointments, and connect with friends can make things easier for young carers.

So far, more than 50 young carers in the new city have been connected to this support and there are a few more places available for further young carers or their families to apply directly to the Tech4Young Carers programme.

The Young Carers Service, led by CHUMS, offers specialist help for unpaid carers aged five to 25. Young people can access one‑to‑one support, group sessions and activities designed to build emotional resilience, boost confidence and create new opportunities to thrive.

Alongside practical advice and guidance, the team has organised a wide range of social activities including parties, day trips and group events—giving young carers valuable time to relax, have fun and connect with others who share similar experiences.

“Young carers play an incredible role in our communities. They show huge love and commitment in supporting their families, often while balancing school, friendships and their own wellbeing,” said Councillor Donna Fuller, Cabinet Member for Adults, Healthy Communities and Housing.

"We want every young carer in Milton Keynes to feel connected, supported and able to build real independence alongside the loving care they provide at home. This service is helping to make that possible, and I’m proud of the difference it’s already making.”

CHUMS MK Young Carers Service is available to all children and young people aged five-25 who live in Milton Keynes and provide practical care for a family member, friend, or neighbour.
