Fifty people who had been rough sleeping have been helped into secure, long term accommodation.
Milton Keynes City Council (MKCC)opened its new and expanded facility for people sleeping rough earlier this year.
The current facility, on Mullion Place in Fishermead, has replaced the former shelter at the Old Bus Station, and works in partnership with the charity, Connection Support.
Mental health and tenancy sustainment support is included as part of the offering.
Accommodation for men and women is available and the previous dormitory-style layout has been replaced, now featuring individual rooms with showers and kitchens.
Up to 20 people can stay at any one time, and have access to 24-hour help, including drug and alcohol recovery programmes and practical life skills training such as cooking lessons.
Previously, the Fishermead site had been used by the Salvation Army which provided space for rough sleepers, but it has been re-established by MKCC as part of its continuing work to reduce homelessness.
“We’re really pleased that this new centre in Fishermead is already making a real difference,” said Councillor Donna Fuller, Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Communities, “We’ve been able to help dozens of people take the next step, whether that’s moving into permanent housing, reconnecting with family or accessing the right support for recovery.
"This is about giving people dignity, stability and the chance to rebuild their lives.”
