Milton Keynes children’s charity calls on Chancellor to provide more financial support to families

Local charity Baby Basics MK has called on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to provide much needed financial assistance to families, in his Budget this afternoon.

Baby Basics MK, which provides essential items including baby food, nappies and clothes to local families with children under five, has seen a 56% rise in demand for its services in the last six months.

Spokesperson Mel Lewis said: “There has been an ongoing lack of awareness at the highest levels of government regarding the current cost-of-living crisis.

“We regularly see two-children families with both parents working full time, who have no money left whatsoever after paying all the bills. As well as using food banks they are using our services for milk, nappies and clothes.

“Another example is single parents, who are unable to cope if their partner fails to pay their child support. Despite tight budgeting there is no money.

“Nappy poverty is another significant problem we come across. Nappies are being reused by removing the contents and putting it back on the child, putting them at risk of disease.

“This is a child poverty epidemic and we can expect to see a generation of children suffering the long term physical and mental health effects.

“We would urge the Chancellor to prioritise these vulnerable children in his Budget today."
