A Stony Stratford business has responded to criticisms about a Union Jack flag placed in its shop window on Remembrance Day.
Some residents found the accompanying phrase – 'Not Far Right, Just Right,' offensive.
One contacted MKFM to say, 'While this may not have been intended as a political statement, it caused some upset, particularly on a day meant to honour and remember those who have served.'
Writing on social media, another observer said: 'Isn't it unpleasant that this kind of ignorance is allowed on our High Street...small minded, hate pushing racism hiding behind Remembrance Sunday.'
But the owner of Marine Fish World has refuted the claims and told MKFM that those who have been upset by the window display are missing the point – and stressed they are completely opposed to far-right ideology and do not endorse hatred, prejudice or political division.
“Our intention was, and remains, to honour Remembrance Sunday and to pay respect to the men and women who have served and sacrificed for this country,” said Mark Wallace, who is himself in an interracial marriage, “The Union Flag was displayed as a symbol of remembrance, unity, and shared history — not a political statement of affiliation, ie the now defunct EDL.
"The phrase 'Not Far Right, Just Right' has been interpreted differently than we intended. The meaning behind it was simply this: it is okay to display the national flag with pride and respect, without it being associated with racism or extremism.
“The Union Flag belongs to all of us— to every background, heritage, and identity that makes up our shared community and to people who call the UK their home. The people we honour on Remembrance Sunday fought for everyone, and we believe it is right to acknowledge and respect that sacrifice. We mustn’t forget that our allies were from around the world too and fought alongside the British,” Mark said.
“The level of hate and vitriol that has come our way was quite shocking, with serious attempts to destroy our business, livelihood and character. For the record, we have a diverse range of customers and have good friendly relationships with them. None of them have expressed alarm or distress over the flag.
“Our door is always open, and we remain committed to being a safe, welcoming space for all,`' he added.
