The RSPCA Milton Keynes & North Bucks branch plays a crucial role in helping both animals and people in our community
Last week, Mayor James Lancaster paid a special visit to the RSPCA Milton Keynes & North Bucks branch’s cattery, where he met with trustees and, of course, plenty of cats and kittens to learn more about the vital work they’re doing to support local animals and the wider community.
The Milton Keynes & North Bucks branch is part of the RSPCA family but operates independently from the national organisation. That means they’re responsible for raising every penny needed to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in our area. From providing emergency vet care to supporting pet owners in need, the branch is funded almost entirely by public donations and their three local charity shops.
During his visit, the Mayor learned about the full scope of the branch’s work – from rescuing stray and abandoned animals to supporting vulnerable pet owners with neutering vouchers and pet food bank assistance. But one of the most urgent issues facing the branch right now is a growing cat crisis.
In June alone, the branch took in over 110 kittens, along with pregnant mums, stray cats, and animals from difficult or unsafe living situations. The cattery is currently stretched to capacity, and the demand for help continues to rise.
Despite the pressure, the branch’s commitment to animal welfare remains unwavering. They never put a healthy animal to sleep, meaning they often spend thousands on veterinary care for animals that still have a chance at recovery.
Currently, they’re going through over 4,000 pouches of wet food per week just to keep up with feeding the kittens. Each kitten is also neutered or spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped before being made available for adoption, all of which adds to the costs.
The Mayor met several of the cats and kittens currently in care and spoke with volunteers about the incredible work being done despite increasingly limited resources. He praised the team’s dedication and encouraged local residents to support in any way they can – whether by donating, adopting, volunteering, or shopping at one of the branch’s charity shops.
The RSPCA Milton Keynes & North Bucks branch plays a crucial role in helping both animals and people in our community, but they can’t do it alone. With demand rising, they urgently need help to continue their work.If you’re able to donate, foster, or adopt, now is the time to step forward. Every pouch of food, every pound donated, and every home offered makes a difference.
