Mask wearing re-introduced at Milton Keynes Hospital following rise in number of infectious diseases

MKFM spoke to Milton Keynes Hospital CEO, Professor Joe Harrison, in an exclusive on-air interview yesterday (19 December).

Milton Keynes University Hospital CEO has told MKFM that mask wearing has been re-introduced in clinical areas of the hospital following an increase in infectious diseases.

"We still have a number of patients with Covid in our hospital, and a number of our staff are unfortunately still off with Covid.

"As of today (19 December), we have re-introduced mask wearing into our hospital because of the number of infectious diseases that are around at the moment, whether that is Covid, flu or winter vomiting," the hospital CEO told MKFM.

"We are trying to make sure that these viruses don't spread in our hospital, so we have asked the public and we have asked our staff in clinical areas to please re-introduce the wearing of masks."

Milton Keynes Hospital has recently taken to social media to state that it has seen 'an unprecedented number of patients attend the Emergency Department during the past 7 days', with the hospital remaining under 'significant pressure'.

"There is no doubt that there is lots of bugs around and we are seeing unfortunately lots of adults and children getting unwell with various strains and that is partly why we have introduced mask wearing, we do want to make sure as many people as possible are healthy for Christmas, so please do look after yourselves," the CEO added.

MKFM also heard that the hospital is currently experiencing "a record-breaking time" with record breaking numbers of patients turning up at the Emergency Department.

The Hospital CEO told MKFM that currently, 8/10 people are seen within 4 hours at the Emergency Department at Milton Keynes University Hospital.

However, during the interview, Joe Harrison did also confirm that Milton Keynes Hospital is not expected to be affected by nurse and ambulance strikes this week. You can find out more about the strikes and why Milton Keynes is currently unaffected here.
