Milton Keynes Council announces major expansion for local primary school

A major extension at Hanslope Primary School will take the number of places available at the school from 270 to 480.

With the design work in its final stages, building plans will be submitted for planning this summer. It is expected that the extension project will be completed next year.

The school is a very popular choice for parents and is judged by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’. This significant expansion will enable the school to meet projected local demand.

The development will include an all-weather sports pitch and an increased parking area. The new sports pitch will be located on a plot of land adjacent to the existing school playing field.

Councillor Zoe Nolan, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “It’s important that we support thriving schools to expand as our local communities develop. Hanslope Primary is a very popular school in a fast-growing area of Milton Keynes. These new facilities are good news for both staff and pupils and will enable more families to access this great school.”

“We’ve worked really closely with our contractors and the school to ensure that funding is focused on facilities that offer the most benefit to pupils and the local community.”

A delegated decision was taken in September 2019 to expand Hanslope Primary School following consultation earlier in the year. There was broad support to expand the number of school places to meet the projected increase in demand. It is funded from a combination of Basic Need Government funding and Section 106 grant funding which relates to local housing developments.

Since 2014, five new schools and 16 school expansion projects have supported an increase of 2,300 pupils in Milton Keynes. By 2026, it is expected that the population of Milton Keynes will have risen by 40,000 to almost 300,000. Milton Keynes Council has committed to ensuring there is a good school place ready for every child.

Design and construction of the expansion is being carried out by GSSArchitecture and RG Carter Ltd.
