Longer-life cats 'left on the shelf' says cat charity in Milton Keynes

Homeless feline OAPs are being routinely overlooked despite cats living longer, happier lives, according to Cats Protection’s Milton Keynes and District Branch.

Cats Protection’s Milton Keynes and District Branch says improvements in cat care have greatly raised the life expectancy and quality of life for cats aged over 12, including the cats currently in its care.

Despite this, the branch is now issuing an appeal to spread awareness of the elderly cats in its care who often get 'left on the shelf'.

Committee member Belle O’Connor said: “While 10 years ago the household moggy could have been expected to live to around 13, today’s life expectancy is much higher and we have seen many cats surviving to their late teens and early 20s in remarkably good health.

“However, their longer existence places the branch under strain because older cats can block up pen spaces for many months, which means we are unable to help other needy cats or kittens until the older ones are found new homes.

“It is a shame because older cats have a lot to offer, as they tend to be lap cats and have much more settled personalities. Though the branch does its very best to care for all the cats in its care, life in a pen is no substitute for a permanent home so I would urge people to consider adopting an
    older cat.”

Corky and Honey are both older cats in desperate need of homes and the branch hopes to find these senior citizens new homes before Christmas. Corky, white with black patches, is a very handsome boy who has spent the last 14 years with the same owner until recently. This change in
circumstances has left him feeling unsettled and timid, Corky really needs a home that can give him the time to settle and adjust to his new surroundings. Corky will need to be the only pet in an adult household that can provide him with love and comfort.

HoneyHoney is a male 10 year old tabby, he’s a very friendly boy who also went into Cats Protection’s care when his owner sadly passed away. Honey would also prefer an indoor home where he can snuggle up somewhere comfy and warm and sleep the day away.

Honey is looking for an adult only home but has lived with other cats before.

If you can offer one of these feline OAPs a loving home this Christmas, please get in touch with the
Milton Keynes and District branch by emailing them at homing@miltonkeynes.cats.org.uk.
