Local pupils ask drivers to ‘Park Smart’ outside school

The Council’s Road Safety Team has been working with pupils and teachers at Caroline Haslett School in Shenley Lodge to improve safety outside the school.

Parking around the school at pick up and drop off times is an issue so a number of measures were undertaken to raise awareness of safety to ensure that parents ‘Park Smart’ when coming to the school.

The road has been resurfaced, double yellow lines and ‘School - Keep Clear’ letters have been repainted and ‘Park Smart’ banners were put up outside the school. The school also held an assembly on road safety and leaflets were sent home to parents advising where and how they can park safely at the school.

The school has also recruited junior road safety officers from pupils in years five and six, who have already undertaken an observation outside the school with the Road Safety Officer to talk to parents who have parked dangerously or inconsiderately.

Cllr Liz Gifford, Cabinet Member for Public Realm said “Parking dangerously or inconsiderately around a school at drop off and pick up times not only endangers road users, particularly pedestrians crossing the road, it also creates stress for all concerned.”

“Walking, cycling or scooting to school is a much more fun, healthy and environmentally friendly way to get to and from school.”
