Loughton family organise fundraiser for nurse suffering with breast cancer

A family from Loughton have set up a fundraising page for their mother who is suffering from Cancer.

Sarah Merchant was has diagnosed with an aggressive grade 3 breast cancer in January this year.

She has worked as a nurse for 35 years, predominantly serving in intensive care and a cancer services manager in Bedford Hospital.

She also helped to set up PEPS which is Palliative Excellence Partnership Service for end of life care, for which she was nominated and commended by the Health Service Journal Awards.

She part retired in 2016 and returned to intensive care at Hinchingbrooke hospital where she continued to work until her recent diagnosis.

Her daughter Rebecca tells MKFM of her mum's dream to have her retirement caravan to travel the Cornish coast.

"With this campaign we are hoping to achieve a brand new caravan which will enable mum to visit her favorite places in Cornwall where we have spent many holidays during the hardest times in our lives of which we have unfortunately had many. The caravan must be brand new for a number of health reasons including mum being very prone to infections because of treatment.

"I don’t have an siblings, my mum has been a single mum since I was 2 and shes cared for me single handily whilst still working long 12 hours shifts as a nurse to keep a roof over my head and provide for me. Not once has she let me down throughout my entire life and I feel like now is my time to move mountains for her, she really is an incredible person, she deserves the world so for her to have this diagnosis is beyond cruel."
