More than £3000 raised for charity as team honours ‘legend’.
A local football club has named a spectators stand after a beloved former player and committee member who died recently.
New Bradwell St Peter FC have named their spectators area the ‘Danny Ferguson Stand’ in memory of the club stalwart who played for the first team and then later volunteered to help run the club, organise matches and keep the changing rooms clean.
The naming of the stand coincided with New Bradwell’s annual May Day Fayre, on Bank Holiday Monday, which raised £3296 for Willen Hospice. The sports association event raises money every year for the hospice charity, but this year had a special importance to club members.
“It’s hard to know where to start or even try to explain just how much Danny will be missed by our little club,” said Kevin Tooley, chairman of New Bradwell St Peter FC.
“We were all so shocked to hear the devastating news of his passing on 22nd November 2024 and still can’t believe that he has gone now.
“Despite being able to moan for England or maybe Scotland, Danny was loved by everybody at the club and has left a massive hole to fill. I just wish I had the chance to thank him one last time for all he did before he left us, and I hope he knows how much everybody loved him at the club.
“He was an absolute legend whose memory will never fade at NBSPFC.”
Danny’s children Joseph, Peta and Tamsin cut the ribbon at the stand’s opening, watched by scores of players and spectators who Danny had inspired at the club.
